A lit beeswax candle and peonies at golden hour
journal · quiet home

closing the apartment for the night

On a single tuberose & fig leaf candle, the kind of light only walnut and beeswax can make, and the small ceremony of putting a day to bed.

The candle is, I admit, an indulgence. ₹1,400 for two hundred grams of wax does not look like a sensible line item on the household ledger. And yet — the candle lasts roughly six weeks of nightly use, and the apartment has not smelled the same way at 9pm in those six weeks. The math works out at about ₹33 per evening. There is no other ₹33 transaction that has done as much for the texture of an evening.

The note is tuberose and fig leaf. Tuberose alone is too loud — it's the smell of a wedding hall in Bombay in late October. Fig leaf alone is too thin, too green, too summery. Together they balance into something that smells like a Mediterranean garden at dusk, which is, conveniently, the exact mood the apartment is trying to be at 9pm anyway.

I light it the same time every night — about 8:45, when the lamps go on and the overhead light goes off — and the small ceremony of striking the match has become the moment the day ends. The pots are still in the sink. The laundry is still in the dryer. The phone is still on the table. But the candle is lit, and that is enough of a signal that I'm allowed to put down whatever I'm carrying.

This is, I realise, what the entire slow-luxury aesthetic is selling. Not the candle. The permission to stop.

(The candle is paid for, like most small things now, in Membership Rewards points accumulated on the Amex Platinum — the same card that pays for the hotels, the same card running 175,000 points on the current welcome offer. The math works in both directions; the candles are inexpensive, the points are quietly abundant.)
